<p>Welcome back to my Top 50 Board Games of All Time! If you missed part 1 of this post, then <strong><a href="https://bitewinggames.com/top-50-board-games-of-all-time-games-50-26/">head on over and check out games 50-26</a></strong>. Today, we&#8217;ll be finishing things out by discussing games 25-1. That&#8217;s right, the cream of the cream of the crop&#8230;</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">25. Camel Up (Second Edition)</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-29.png" alt="" class="wp-image-427" width="365" height="364" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-29.png 901w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-29-300x300.png 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-29-100x100.png 100w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-29-600x599.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-29-150x150.png 150w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-29-768x767.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px" /></figure></div>

<p><em>Best suited for everyone</em></p>

<p><strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/260605/camel-second-edition">Camel Up</a></strong> might be the most reliable party game in my collection.&nbsp; If there is any game that I can place before a random assortment of 4-8 friends, family, or strangers, and expect them to request a second and third play in a row, that game is undoubtedly Camel Up.&nbsp; None can resist the allure of betting on chunky, colorful camels as they race around the desert.&nbsp; Between the stacking camels, dice-dispensing pyramid, memorably dramatic moments, popup palm tree, and shoot-for-the-moon strategies, this one has it all.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">24. El Grande</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-37.png" alt="" class="wp-image-435" width="441" height="322" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-37.png 794w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-37-600x439.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-37-300x220.png 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-37-768x562.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 441px) 100vw, 441px" /></figure></div>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<p><em>Best suited for everyone</em></p>

<p>While it doesn’t have the party pizazz of Camel Up, <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/93/el-grande">El Grande</a></strong> has been another crowd pleaser at my table.&nbsp; This classic strategy game of competing for area majorities is unmatched in its elegant flow and potent interaction.&nbsp; Many designs since have wisely borrowed from El Grande’s master class mechanisms, but few, if any, have risen to its level of grace and wit plus the drama of revealing the contents of the towering Castillo.&nbsp; It’s not really worth considering outside of the four or five player count, but within that range you’ll find consistently satisfying area influence, auctioning, and action drafting to be had.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">23. Renature</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/pic5535714.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1178" width="395" height="395" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/pic5535714.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/pic5535714-300x300.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/pic5535714-100x100.jpg 100w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/pic5535714-150x150.jpg 150w" sizes="(max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px" /></figure></div>

<p><em>Best suited for everyone (but be ready for some mean moments)</em></p>

<p>El Grande designer, Wolfgang Kramer, also brought us last year’s <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/300001/renature">Renature</a></strong> with the help of Azul designer Michael Kiesling, and this is a game that I’m loving more and more with each new play.&nbsp; One of the quickest ways to my heart is down the path of simple, clever brutality, and Renature is indeed beautifully simple, wonderfully clever, and deliciously brutal.&nbsp; This game sees its competitors placing one domino onto the board at a time, and touching domino animals must match.&nbsp; But the placement of a domino also allows one to plant an adjacent foliage piece, and these plant tokens are used to compete for area majority or even cancel out other player’s plants.&nbsp; I stand by <strong><a href="https://bitewinggames.com/top-15-board-games-of-2020/">my declaration that this is the greatest domino game OF ALL TIME</a></strong>.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">22. A Feast for Odin</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/pic3146943.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1321" width="279" height="391" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/pic3146943.png 428w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/pic3146943-214x300.png 214w" sizes="(max-width: 279px) 100vw, 279px" /></figure></div>

<p><em>Best suited for hobbyist gamers</em></p>

<p>While it has dropped out of <strong><a href="https://bitewinggames.com/nicks-current-top-50-games/5/">my previous top 10 games list</a></strong>, that’s more a side-effect of many other stellar games climbing their way up my rankings than <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/177736/feast-odin">A Feast for Odin</a></strong> becoming any less enjoyable over time.&nbsp; I would label this a heavy worker placement polyomino Euro game with relatively low-interaction.&nbsp; When there are roughly SIXTY worker placement spaces to choose from—like a wide sandbox of strategies one can use to acquire points—it is typically quite effortless to stay out of each other’s way and do your own thing.&nbsp; While this blog is riddled with me bemoaning low-interaction games on a regular basis, mostly due to their commonly stale dynamics and limited replayability, I find that A Feast for Odin is one of the few exceptions to my preferences.&nbsp; The numerous interlocking concepts and mechanisms here are perfect for a warm, cozy, lazy few hours of puzzling perfection that still satisfies after all these plays.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">21. Bus</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/pic4908538.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1253" width="469" height="332" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/pic4908538.jpg 845w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/pic4908538-600x426.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/pic4908538-300x213.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/pic4908538-768x545.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 469px) 100vw, 469px" /></figure></div>

<p><em>Best suited for cold-blooded strategists</em></p>

<p><strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/552/bus">Bus</a></strong> is a game about building bus routes and transporting passengers around town, yet this design is no flowery Ticket to Ride.&nbsp; Imagine a world where all people were predictable creatures of habit.&nbsp; They go to the work, then head to the bar, then go home, rinse and repeat… as long as a bus route can get them there, of course.&nbsp; On and on they cycle through this unchanging lifestyle, with the only exception being when a greedy bus line decides to STOP TIME.&nbsp; Suddenly, everyone in town decides to work another shift in a row, or pull an all-nighter at the bar, or play hooky from their jobs and kick back at home, and all the buses that were prepared to take them to their usual next destination are suddenly hosed and empty-handed.&nbsp; With completely open information and not even a hint of luck, Bus is a pure strategy game that has players feuding over the tight economy of passengers in an effort to scrape just a few precious point morsels from this ruthless game.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">20. Tournament at Avalon</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_6929-3-1024x729.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-1081" width="461" height="327"/></figure></div>

<p><em>Best suited for everyone</em></p>

<p>If you really want to know what this wacky trick-taking card game is all about, I would direct you to <strong><a href="https://bitewinggames.com/double-review-tournament-at-avalon-the-crew-the-quest-for-planet-nine/">my full review from last year</a></strong>.&nbsp; Here’s a sample of what I said: </p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"><p>“If the possibility of falling behind early and spending the rest of the game trying to claw your way back to the top while your leading opponents pounce on you like sharks to a bleeding prey sounds dreadful, then steer clear of Tournament at Avalon… Then again, perhaps you are like me.&nbsp; Maybe you’re happy to roll with the punches and simply want to experience trick-taking at its finest.&nbsp; In Tournament at Avalon, you may be completely fine with being the favorite piñata of the round because you see the fresh gaping wound in your side for what it truly is: a firehose of retribution.&nbsp; You may be the type of competitor who loves to form shaky alliances with fellow weaklings to surround and beat down the mighty.&nbsp; And when you are the current King of the Hill, you welcome the opportunity to bob and weave around targeted attacks and gleefully watch as swinging blows skim past your head to land squarely on your neighbor’s face.”</p></blockquote>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">19. My City</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/pic5428585.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1322" width="352" height="352" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/pic5428585.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/pic5428585-300x300.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/pic5428585-100x100.jpg 100w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/pic5428585-150x150.jpg 150w" sizes="(max-width: 352px) 100vw, 352px" /></figure></div>

<p><em>Best suited for everyone</em></p>

<p>Perhaps you’ve noticed by now that I have a soft spot for great polyomino games.&nbsp; In my Top 50 board games of all time, we’ve already covered titans from master polyomino designer, Uwe Rosenberg, including A Feast For Odin and New York Zoo.&nbsp; Yet the game that <strong><a href="https://bitewinggames.com/battle-of-the-polyominoes/">claims the crown to world’s best polyomino game</a></strong>, and the title that makes a strong case for being the best Legacy design yet, is none other than Reiner Knizia’s <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/295486/my-city">My City</a></strong>.&nbsp; We’ve played this one 24 times now—that’s as many episodes as the game contains, so we’re not likely to play it much further with the “eternal game”—but that’s more plays than most other titles on this list.&nbsp; We’ll always hold a special memory in our hearts for the journey we took through My City</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">18. Ethnos</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-42.png" alt="" class="wp-image-440" width="349" height="343" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-42.png 913w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-42-600x591.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-42-300x296.png 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-42-768x757.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 349px) 100vw, 349px" /></figure></div>

<p><em>Best suited for everyone</em></p>

<p><strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/206718/ethnos">Ethnos</a></strong> remains one of my go-to gateway games (games to introduce people to the hobby) because it never fails to entertain newcomers while continuing to engage me.&nbsp; While the art direction could use a drastic overhaul to match the family friendly nature of the design, none of that matters once the cards are dealt and the fun begins.&nbsp; Turns are as simple as drawing a card or playing a set known as a “band of allies” of matching colors or creatures.&nbsp; The band will net you points while the card on top of your band (the “leader”) grants you a special bonus and a token placement on the map.&nbsp; Much like El Grande, players compete for points via area majorities.&nbsp; While some folks complain of “top decking” in Ethnos, where you spend your turns drawing a card off the top of the deck until you find what you want, I find this to be a hollow complaint thanks to a little wrinkle that Paolo Mori includes in the design: Whenever you play a band of cards from your hand, you must discard the rest of your hand faceup into the market for other players to feast on.&nbsp; Suddenly, you have to decide whether the “top decking” strategy is worth it for that one extra card, because everything else you draw will simply help your competition.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">17. The King’s Dilemma</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/pic3956355.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1405" width="367" height="367" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/pic3956355.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/pic3956355-300x300.png 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/pic3956355-100x100.png 100w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/pic3956355-150x150.png 150w" sizes="(max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px" /></figure></div>

<p><em>Best suited for a regular group of 5 players</em></p>

<p>Aside from My City, <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/245655/kings-dilemma">The King’s Dilemma</a></strong> is the only other legacy design that made my Top 50 Board Games of All Time, or even came close, for that matter.&nbsp; The concept of a legacy game—a game whose rules and components permanently change over time based on the outcome and decisions of each play—is a fascinating, alluring, and popular feature in the industry.&nbsp; But our experience with some of the more popular options has uncovered it’s ugly side-effects including rules &amp; component management fatigue, forced narratives, messy productions, and unwieldy scheduling requirements.&nbsp; Burnout is real within this genre, but The King’s Dilemma has soared over these common traps across our many plays by staying focused on the addicting core concept of political negotiation and bribing.&nbsp; As you’ll soon find out with even higher rated games, I’m a sucker for a good negotiation game, and The King’s Dilemma hits the spot.&nbsp; I love how the secret incentives can have me championing the cause of the good people in one game and sacrificing their well being for my personal gain in the next like the greedy posterity of a heroic monarch.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">16. Wavelength</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-44.png" alt="" class="wp-image-442" width="359" height="359" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-44.png 900w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-44-300x300.png 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-44-100x100.png 100w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-44-600x600.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-44-150x150.png 150w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-44-768x768.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px" /></figure></div>

<p><em>Best suited for everyone, especially groups of 6 or more</em></p>

<p>And here we arrive at my favorite party game, <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/262543/wavelength">Wavelength</a></strong>.&nbsp; Between <strong><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpa80lU4sqQ">Kyle’s video review</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://bitewinggames.com/wavelength-review/">my own written review</a></strong>, we’ve covered the entire spectrum of reasons why we love this game. The simple truth is that Wavelength effortlessly captures the the feeling of a gameshow and generates engaging conversations and hilarious memories that last far beyond the party.&nbsp; <strong><a href="https://bitewinggames.com/how-to-win-backers-and-crowdfund-projects-a-case-study/">It was the first game I backed on Kickstarter, sending me down the rabbit hole of thrillingly creative possibilities</a></strong>. </p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">15. The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine</h3>

<p><em>Best suited for everyone</em></p>

<p>Now we are onto my top rated cooperative game, and not only that, but this is one of <em>only two</em> cooperative games that made my Top 50 Board Games of All Time.&nbsp; Don’t get me wrong here, I dig a solid cooperative game such as Pandemic, Mysterium, and Horrified.&nbsp; Yet those types of games obviously don’t quite hit the spot for me as all the competitive ones on my list.&nbsp; <strong><a href="https://bitewinggames.com/double-review-tournament-at-avalon-the-crew-the-quest-for-planet-nine/">So what makes The Crew so special?</a></strong>&nbsp; In this mission-based trick-taking game, everyone’s turns matter and nobody can quarterback them through it.&nbsp; The only communication allowed between players is a single token that lets you signal or imply information about some of the cards in your hand.&nbsp; Each new challenge and each new hand of cards presents an obstacle that can often seem impossible to overcome, yet it feels amazing when your crew finally triumphs.&nbsp; It’s an addictive challenge that takes players on an unforgettable 50-mission journey.</p>

<p><em>Best suited for everyone</em></p>

<p>We’re talking about my two favorite card games back-to-back between The Crew and now <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/172/sale">For Sale</a></strong>.&nbsp; For Sale consists of two phases: auctioning coins for houses that become your hand of cards, then selling that hand of cards one at a time in a closed auction.&nbsp; When I pass on the auctioning of the first phase, I have to pay half of what I’ve bid up to that point and take the lowest value face-up house.&nbsp; So there is a game of chicken between players when nobody wants to take the grungy outhouse card, and thus the bidding war ensues.&nbsp; Yet the outhouse card might be a great one to claim with a pass in a particular round if the other options aren’t that much better and spending your precious coins to avoid it will merely land you a slightly higher card.&nbsp; The second phase becomes a game of predicting your opponents’ plays, as the bidding becomes a closed auction where everyone plays a single house card facedown and reveals their bid at the same time and the values of the money cards are dispersed to players according to who bid highest, who bid lowest, and everything in between.&nbsp; Nothing feels worse than wasting your best card on an auction that everyone else played low for.&nbsp; Conversely, eeking out the best money card of a round with a measly house makes you feel like a mastermind.&nbsp; And that roller coaster of emotions is the magic of For Sale.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/237182/root">Root</a></strong> has to be one of the most aesthetically charming games on this list.&nbsp; Screen-printed, wooden animal tokens and their more detailed card and board illustrations are all brimming with personality.&nbsp; Rich colors of the woodland span from deep orange hues to refreshing green shades.&nbsp; Card suits consist of mice, birds, foxes, and rabbits.&nbsp; There is no shortage of warmth in the presentation of Root.&nbsp; Yet this art direction was intentionally chosen because of the stark contrast it presents against the savage gameplay.&nbsp; These woodland creatures are at war, and a negotiated alliance in one round can quickly become a callous betrayal in the next.&nbsp; No animal is safe from a sudden beatdown, and only one faction will triumph.&nbsp; With the consistent release of more expansions including animal factions over these past few years, and at least two more in the pipeline, it feels as though I could explore Root’s fascinating asymmetry for dozens upon dozens more plays.</p>

<p>This may not be shocking to you, but Reiner Knizia’s <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/266164/babylonia">Babylonia</a></strong> at number 12 feels like a bit of stealth ranking to me.&nbsp; It’s one of the more recent Knizia’s which flew under my radar as I was gobbling up his most popular and revered titles.&nbsp; Yet when I finally came around to Babylonia, I found it to be a rock-solid game that grew on me with each and every play.&nbsp; This is a fast-paced, 45-minute strategy game that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed at the 2, 3, and 4 player counts.&nbsp; Everything about picking up the clackity wooden tiles, slotting them into my rack, and deciding which ones to place onto the board and where makes for a deeply satisfying ritual.&nbsp; My deepest thanks is owed to Space Biff, whose <strong><a href="https://spacebiff.com/2020/11/16/babylonia/">eloquently written review</a></strong> talked me into trying this brilliant jewel. </p>

<p>Perhaps <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/12/ra">Ra</a></strong> is so high on my list simply because I’ve been waiting to acquire my own copy for far too long.&nbsp; Yet maybe it has made its way here due to the perfect blend of auctioning and push-your-luck that it provides.&nbsp; How long will you wait to spend your best sun disks?&nbsp; Wait long enough, and you’ll be one of the only ones left to bid on all the lucrative tiles.&nbsp; Wait too long, and you may find the round ending before you’ve put your sun disks to good use.&nbsp; Is this auction really worth fighting for?&nbsp; Surely you aren’t going to let another opponent claim these tiles for so cheap, are you?&nbsp; This game is jam-packed with tough decisions.&nbsp; As a fan of auctioning games, it doesn’t get much better than Ra.</p>

<p>Despite <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/43015/hansa-teutonica">Hansa Teutonica</a></strong> being over ten years old and looking even older, it remains undeniably refreshing amid the onslaught of sluggish, overly complicated, low-interaction Euros because it is fast-paced, streamlined, and wonderfully interactive.&nbsp; The <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/286749/hansa-teutonica-big-box">new Big Box version</a></strong> provides even more content to explore—it makes for an incredible package value that is not big in size, but big in content.&nbsp; <strong><a href="https://youtu.be/khluadSO_Ic">Quinns of Shut Up &amp; Sit Down recently proposed that this might just be the greatest Euro ever</a></strong>, and I’m inclined to agree. &nbsp; That’s why the big box version was <strong><a href="https://bitewinggames.com/top-15-board-games-of-2020/">my number one release of 2020</a></strong>.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/521/crokinole">Crokinole</a></strong> straddles the fence that separates board games from competitive sports and rides that fence to the moon and back.&nbsp; Darts, billiards, foosball, and Jenga are perfectly fine indoor activities, but Crokinole takes the cake for me.&nbsp; Like a meaner, faster, sexier version of curling, Crokinole sees its participants flicking discs to the center of a large, slick board as they ricochet off a center ring of posts and collide with other discs.&nbsp; There’s far more strategy here than simply aiming for the center hole.&nbsp; With enough plays, you start to realize that the planned positioning of your disc after you hit an opponent’s disc is just as important as knocking them off the board.&nbsp; Crokinole works as both a 4-player party game and a 2-player showdown, and my board will remain a family heirloom for decades to come.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">1. Pax Pamir: Second Edition</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-47-1024x799.png" alt="" class="wp-image-445" width="411" height="320" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-47-1024x799.png 1024w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-47-600x468.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-47-300x234.png 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-47-768x599.png 768w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-47.png 1154w" sizes="(max-width: 411px) 100vw, 411px" /></figure></div>

<p><em>Best suited for hobbyist gamers</em></p>

<p>When every aspect of a game oozes with deliberate thought and delicate attention to detail, it’s hard not to be attracted to such an experience regardless of its theme or genre.&nbsp; From the deeply intricate gameplay to the opulent multi-sensory production, none could call <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/256960/pax-pamir-second-edition">Pax Pamir: Second Edition</a></strong> anything but a labor of love.&nbsp; Pamir transcends the level of consumer product and cements itself as a historical, philosophical, and strategic sandbox for participants to lose themselves in as they explore its nuances over the course of endlessly engaging plays.&nbsp; To boil this game down to its mechanical pieces—a political area control tableau builder—is a disservice to its greater whole.&nbsp; The vast card market, oscillating coalitions, tight economy, and unstable alliances all combine into a supple, historical harmony between musical chair loyalties and tug of war gameplay.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator is-style-dots"/>

<p><strong>This concludes my Top 50 Board Games of All Time! <p><em>A Case Study of my Journey down the Rabbit Hole of backing Board Game Projects on Kickstarter</em></p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"><p>&#8220;This your last chance. After this there is no turning back. You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.&#8221;</p><cite>Morpheus &#8211; The Matrix</cite></blockquote>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="587" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Screen-Shot-2020-07-14-at-3.50.05-PM-1024x587.png" alt="" class="wp-image-996" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Screen-Shot-2020-07-14-at-3.50.05-PM-1024x587.png 1024w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Screen-Shot-2020-07-14-at-3.50.05-PM-600x344.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Screen-Shot-2020-07-14-at-3.50.05-PM-300x172.png 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Screen-Shot-2020-07-14-at-3.50.05-PM-768x441.png 768w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Screen-Shot-2020-07-14-at-3.50.05-PM.png 1433w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Wavelength &#8211; My entrance into the Rabbit Hole</figcaption></figure>

<p>It all started when I stumbled across Wavelength on social media. Talk of the game lead me to its active project on Kickstarter, a crowdfunding website that I had heard much about but never actually delved into. Wavelength&#8217;s colorful, psychedelic art design drew me in like an unsuspecting Alice. I clicked play on the campaign video, and down the rabbit hole I fell.</p>

<p>Mad props to whoever made that <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/alxhague/wavelength/description"><strong>video</strong></a>, by the way. If anyone needs a case study in how to hook potential backers and reel them in like a fish, just check out that whole page. After combing through the entire pitch, I wasn&#8217;t just excited about the concept, I was compelled to help bring about its existence.</p>

<p>This is the crux of Kickstarter&#8230; when a person or group dream up an incredible idea, pitch it to a crowd, and they collectively pledge their resources and efforts to make it a reality. This is old news to many backers and creators who have been using crowdfunding for years. We&#8217;ve even reached a point where many desensitized backers call Kickstarter a pre-order system, especially in the tabletop games category.</p>

<p>While that&#8217;s not entirely false, there is still something magical about joining a community of passionate dreamers and embarking on a journey of creation. When you support an exciting project and it fully delivers on its lofty promises, there is no better feeling. Fortunately for Kickstarter, Wavelength hit a homerun (<strong><a href="https://bitewinggames.com/wavelength-review/">just read my review of the game</a></strong>), and I&#8217;ve kept more projects on my radar ever since.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Projects that Earned My Pledge and How They Did It</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Captivating Videos — <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/alxhague/wavelength/description">Wavelength</a></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="416" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/pic5140756.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-927" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/pic5140756.jpg 900w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/pic5140756-600x277.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/pic5140756-300x139.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/pic5140756-768x355.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption>The first domino</figcaption></figure>

<p>Let&#8217;s talk a bit more about Wavelength&#8217;s campaign video. If you clicked the link above and watched it, you&#8217;ll notice something incredibly unique about it compared to most other campaign videos. How much time was spent showcasing or explaining the game? Practically <em>none.</em> You hardly even see a single game component in the entire video, yet it has a laser focus on what makes Wavelength special.</p>

<p>Instead of explaining to us how the game plays, the creators of this video opted to show us the game through the players&#8217; emotions, reactions, and interactions. It paints a very clear picture to its viewers of what they can expect to experience with their family and friends. Most importantly, it briefly and succinctly shows the viewer the exact outcome they want from this kind of game and then leaves the rest of the project page to fill in the details of how they&#8217;ll get to that outcome.</p>

<p>Contrast this to many other campaign videos that quickly lose me&#8230; Usually they get caught up in fancy thematic narratives with fluffy animations and take far too long to get to the point of why I should back their project. In my opinion, if your campaign video is the first thing people see on your project page, then it should absolutely feature the hook of your concept and <em>nothing else</em>. Let the rest of the page take care of the details, once the hook is set.</p>

<p>I had never even visited Kickstarter.com before encountering Wavelength, but that campaign page had my pledge within minutes because it knew how reach me on a personal and emotional level.</p>

<p>Wavelength was my form of taking the red pill and falling down the rabbit hole into Kickstarter Wonderland. Button Shy&#8217;s affordable, low-risk wallet games kept me hanging around for more.</p>

<p>I initially heard of all three of these games in unique ways:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>While enjoying our recently acquired copy of Wingspan, I heard that Elizabeth Hargrave&#8217;s next published game (<strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/257614/tussie-mussie">Tussie Mussie</a></strong>) was on the way with another presentation that would appeal to my wife. Tussie Mussie was also the winner of the <strong><a href="https://www.gencant.com/gencant2018-game-design-winner/">2018 Gen Can&#8217;t design contest</a></strong>.</li><li>Separately, I watched Tom Vasel&#8217;s raving review of <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/251658/sprawlopolis">Sprawlopolis</a></strong> that put it on my wishlist. </li><li>Finally, I listened to the <strong><a href="https://www.boardgamedesignlab.com/how-to-win-a-design-competition-with-corry-damey/">Board Game Design Lab&#8217;s episode with Corry Damey about How to Win a Design Competition</a></strong>, and of course the competition winner (<strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/256705/seasons-rice">Seasons of Rice</a></strong>) piqued my interest. </li></ul>

<p>These above encounters were critical for getting these projects on my radar. Each game had an underlying credibility to it that allowed me to put my trust in a design I had never played. Perhaps more importantly, the pledge levels were all at a reasonable price ($10 per game) that gave me little reason to hesitate when clicking the pledge button. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Quality &amp; Consistency — <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dicethrone/dice-throne-adventures-and-season-one-rerolled">Dice Throne Adventures &amp; Season 1 ReRolled</a></h3>

<div class="wp-block-group"><div class="wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow">

<p>I was already an owner of Dice Throne Season 2 when this project went live. Having been blown away by Season 2&#8217;s character variety and production quality, there was little resistance left within me when Roxley tempted me with more Dice Throne goodness. But there is something to be said for making each little detail of a production a premium feeling experience. When publishers display a high standard of consistency and quality from one project to the next, backers will notice and they&#8217;ll return for more.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Alluring Presentations &amp; Illuminating Playthroughs — <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/953146955/sleeping-gods">Sleeping Gods</a></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="730" height="600" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/image-2.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1007" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/image-2.png 730w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/image-2-600x493.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/image-2-300x247.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></figure>

<p>Sleeping Gods was Kickstarter&#8217;s biggest challenge yet in successfully acquiring me as a backer. The $70 base pledge is a tall order coming from a publisher and designer that I have no prior experience with. On top of that, this is a style of game that I have never even played before. The art and presentation are certainly alluring, but the pessimism was strong within me.</p>

<p>How am I supposed to know whether I like a storybook adventure game? Won&#8217;t this just feel like a more clumsy, fiddly version of a video game, book, or movie? What if I start playing and quickly discover that I blew $70 + shipping on a game that is clearly not for me?</p>

<p>I had plenty of reasons to stand my ground and let this campaign ship sail, yet I ended up backing Sleeping Gods. Ryan Laukat, you sly dog. So how did he do it?</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="688" height="600" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/image-3.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1010" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/image-3.png 688w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/image-3-600x523.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/image-3-300x262.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 688px) 100vw, 688px" /></figure>

<p>Well, that dang artwork and concept was so well imagined and executed that I <em>wanted </em>this unique game to work for me. I think this kind of thing happens all the time to us gamers. Just look at something like PARKS, Camel Up, Horrified, or plenty of others. Strip away the gorgeous artwork, the inviting theme, the killer components, and much of what makes those games shine is lost. PARKS becomes a generic resource collector, Camel Up becomes a luck-infused dice roller, Horrified looks like an off-brand Pandemic copy-cat . Moral of the story: don&#8217;t underestimate the value of a unique theme, quality art, and thoughtful production.</p>

<p>The stellar presentation of Sleeping Gods wasn&#8217;t enough on its own to get me to bite. I still needed to find something within the gameplay that made me say, &#8220;Ooo, this looks fun!&#8221; Who helped me to uncover that fun? None other than Rahdo, himself.</p>

<p>Oddly enough, my opinion on games hardly even aligns with Rahdo&#8217;s. Usually when he says, &#8220;Too mean,&#8221; I say, &#8220;Just right.&#8221; Yet, I&#8217;ve found Rahdo&#8217;s run-throughs to be extremely valuable in communicating the puzzly tension of certain games. It took me a lot of deep digging into the project page and beyond, but Rahdo is exactly what I needed to push me over the edge on both Sleeping Gods and the next game I backed, Calico.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Alluring Presentations &amp; Illuminating Playthroughs — <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/flatoutgames/calico-0/description">Calico</a></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="600" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/pic4823356.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1012" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/pic4823356.jpg 800w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/pic4823356-600x450.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/pic4823356-300x225.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/pic4823356-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></figure>

<p>Like Sleeping Gods, Calico is game that tempted me initially but required more effort to earn my pledge. I could tell it filled a similar niche as Azul and Sagrada, which have been big hits with my wife. But on the surface level, I had no way of knowing whether this one would measure up to its competition and justify its place on our game shelf.</p>

<p>Once more, it was <strong><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cW_EgLhf_3Q&amp;t=2s">Rahdo&#8217;s runthroug</a></strong><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cW_EgLhf_3Q&amp;t=2s"><strong>h</strong></a> that uncovered the excruciating tension lurking within Calico&#8217;s gameplay. Before watching his play-through, this was just a cute puzzly quilting game with cats, and I was mildly interested. After watching his play-through, this was an agonizing feline challenge with colorful, crunchy decisions, and I was a backer.</p>

<p>These kinds of video previews that not only show how a game plays but how a game <em>feels</em> to play are often critical factors in earning a dip into my wallet.</p>

<p>Perhaps the most important thing a publisher can do for long-term success is maintain a high standard of design from one title to the next. A mediocre game can often do more harm to a small publisher&#8217;s library than its short-term sales are worth. When I catch onto a publisher or designer that is on a hot streak, I will preorder and pledge to every title they throw at me until they lose my trust. If I&#8217;m burned by a design team, it&#8217;ll take a lot of convincing from critics to get me to take another chance on future games. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="563" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/pic5164812.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1038" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/pic5164812.jpg 900w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/pic5164812-600x375.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/pic5164812-300x188.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/pic5164812-768x480.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption>The hype is strong with this one</figcaption></figure>

<p>If you&#8217;ve ever been an in-patient at a hospital, you&#8217;ve likely had an IV in your arm drip-feeling your body fluids and medications. An IV (intravenous therapy) is a highly effect route of medication. It delivers drugs directly into your blood stream, bypassing any need for absorption or digestion. In the board game industry, if drugs equate to hype and medicating a patient equates to marketing, then companies like Stonemaier Games and Leder Games have perfected the IV Marketing technique.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/doctor-in-hospital-at-iv-drip-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1036" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/doctor-in-hospital-at-iv-drip-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/doctor-in-hospital-at-iv-drip-600x400.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/doctor-in-hospital-at-iv-drip-300x200.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/doctor-in-hospital-at-iv-drip-768x512.jpg 768w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/doctor-in-hospital-at-iv-drip-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/doctor-in-hospital-at-iv-drip.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Nothing like a daily dose of hype</figcaption></figure>

<p>When I started following these companies on social media, I noticed a pattern in their techniques. Leder Games publishes regular posts on their <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2291265/designer-diary-1-whats-all-then">designer diaries</a></strong> leading up to a game preorder or Kickstarter launch. Stonemaier Games does the <strong><a href="https://stonemaiergames.com/games/pendulum/design-diary-pendulum/">same thing</a></strong> on their website as well as creating <strong><a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/pendulumboardgame">Facebook fan pages</a></strong> for each game. Through regular updates and social media posts that tease out more juicy information and tantalizing images, these companies drip feed hype directly to their fans and potential customers. By the time the pledge/preorder button goes live, many people are eager to click it.</p>

<p>Horrible Guild got me good with this one. It started out simple with a nice pair of roll &amp; writes with a new coat of paint, improved gameplay, and unique variants. But things quickly got out of hand with more expansion dice, epic boards, and giant box to fit everything into. I often roll my eyes at the endless extras that publishers try to cram into their project, but I couldn&#8217;t resist these extras.</p>

<p>Often, these crowdfunding campaigns will try to milk their backers by merely offering fancier components, meaningless variety, and questionable add-ons. When I see a publisher trying to tempt backers to purchase <em>20 colors of player components for a 5 player game,</em> I begin to question their judgment of customer-focused value.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="833" height="619" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Screen-Shot-2020-07-21-at-9.16.26-AM.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1034" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Screen-Shot-2020-07-21-at-9.16.26-AM.png 833w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Screen-Shot-2020-07-21-at-9.16.26-AM-600x446.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Screen-Shot-2020-07-21-at-9.16.26-AM-300x223.png 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Screen-Shot-2020-07-21-at-9.16.26-AM-768x571.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 833px) 100vw, 833px" /><figcaption>Things got a little out of hand here&#8230;</figcaption></figure>

<p>With Railroad Ink Challenge, Horrible Guild kept offering me more of precisely what I wanted. With roll &amp; writes generally being a low-interaction genre, I look to variants and expansions to give me more replayability and keep my brain on its brain-toes. Thus, I can&#8217;t resist new challenges within this familiar favorite.</p>

<p>If you&#8217;ve played any of Facade Games&#8217; Dark Cities titles before, then you already have a solid idea of what you are going to get with Bristol 1350. That&#8217;s exactly what makes this series so reliably solid. Facade Games has a playbook that their fans love and they have no reason to stray from it. While their productions continue to get prettier and more polished, a Dark Cities game will always be a Dark Cities game.</p>

<p>To help matters further, I had the opportunity to play Bristol 1350 several times as it was being developed. When a publisher knows they have a solid design on their hands, there is no better way to sell it to potential backers and earn their loyal support than giving them a chance to try it before buying it. This often happens through Print &amp; Play, Tabletop Simulator (or equivalent software), or live demos. After having a blast playing a cheap, ugly version of Bristol 1350, you can bet I was absolutely ready to fork over some cash for a gorgeous, polished version. I even went so far as to <strong><a href="https://bitewinggames.com/bristol-1350-preview/">write a preview for the game</a></strong> because I believed in it that much. The best evangelists are firsthand witnesses, so why not let people get their hands on your game?</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Listening &amp; Responding to Backers — <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/matagot/kemet-blood-and-sand/description">Kemet: Blood and Sand</a></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="731" height="600" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/image-8.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1039" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/image-8.png 731w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/image-8-600x492.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/image-8-300x246.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 731px) 100vw, 731px" /></figure>

<p>Kemet: Blood and Sand had a controversial campaign journey, to say the least. Loads of backers had seemingly dozens of different complaints as the Matagot&#8217;s campaign trudged from one problem to the next. These complaints included confusion about pricing and value, questionable graphic design and iconography, awkward miniature figures, theme-breaking expansions, and more. </p>

<p>These many problematic ingredients seemed like a recipe for crowdfunding disaster. While the campaign was messier than intended, Matagot weathered the storm well. Each major complaint was met with proposals, polls, adjustments, and solutions as Matagot listened and responded to their backers. While some backers abandoned ship, many more chose to ride out the waves or even join in on the crazy journey after seeing the commitment and care from the team behind Kemet. The end result was a nearly 1 million dollar campaign and a game that is much more likely to reach its full potential.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Importance of a Hook — <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/grailgames/whale-riders">Whale Riders</a></h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/pic5421573.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1040" width="504" height="504" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/pic5421573.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/pic5421573-300x300.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/pic5421573-100x100.jpg 100w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/pic5421573-150x150.jpg 150w" sizes="(max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px" /><figcaption>This artwork just really hits the spot for me</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Whale Riders has been another interesting project to follow. I&#8217;ve recently become a huge fan of Reiner Knizia&#8217;s designs, so this one was easy for me to get behind. The part that has caught me off guard is how <em>little </em>support this game received on Kickstarter. The game quickly funded and hit the $20,000 mark, but it seemed to plateau after that and was barely crawling higher every day since (until the typical last-minute bump).</p>

<p>Grail Games&#8217; project seemed to have the complete package for a mega hit (at least in my naive eyes). It combines a legendary designer with an exceptional artist and a proven publisher. The game is accessible, the theme is whimsical, and the price is reasonable. I&#8217;ve also come across plenty of advertisements for it in the usual places. I would have placed my money on this game <em>at least</em> hitting six figures. Yet that didn&#8217;t turn out to be within reach.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/pic5517605.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1045" width="469" height="352" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/pic5517605.jpg 800w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/pic5517605-600x450.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/pic5517605-300x225.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/pic5517605-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 469px) 100vw, 469px" /></figure></div>

<p>As I&#8217;ve thought about it more, I can only come up with one reason why the game hasn&#8217;t received more support. The one thing that Whale Riders seems to be missing is a <strong>hook.</strong> Don&#8217;t get me wrong, Whale Riders looks like a solid game on all accounts; that&#8217;s why I backed it. But for comparison&#8217;s sake, let&#8217;s try to find the hook of the above mentioned kickstarter projects:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Wavelength</span>: That big, beautiful plastic <strong>device</strong> that allows for <strong>grand reveals and dramatic moments</strong></li><li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Button Shy&#8217;s Wallet Games</span>: <strong>Pretty-looking, dirt-cheap</strong> games that pack a punch and<strong> fit in your pocket</strong></li><li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Dice Throne Adventures &amp; Season 1 Rerolled</span>:  A <strong>premium</strong> <strong>production</strong> of a remodeled season 1 and a cooperative expansion to a beloved Yahtzee combat game</li><li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Sleeping Gods</span>: An epic, <strong>hand-crafted</strong> <strong>cooperative</strong> <strong>story-book adventure</strong></li><li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Calico</span>: A colorful, <strong>Azul-like puzzly game</strong> with <strong>recessed player boards</strong> and <strong>cats</strong>!</li><li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Loot of Lima</span>:  A clever deduction game with <strong>interactive player shields</strong></li><li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Oath</span>: A quirky strategy game with a <strong>gorgeous production </strong>and an <strong>innovative system</strong></li><li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">GPS / Sequoia / Mountain Goats</span>: A <strong>bundle of fancy 10-minute filler games</strong> that are easy to teach and addictive to play</li><li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Railroad Ink Challenge</span>: The <strong>ultimate roll &amp; write package</strong> with <strong>dozens of custom dice, maps, and objectives</strong></li><li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Bristol 1350</span>: A <strong>thematic social deduction racing</strong> game that <strong>plays 1-9 players and fits into a compact book box</strong></li><li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Kemet- Blood and Sand</span>:  A <strong>mega hit game reborn and reimagined</strong> with improved gameplay, art, and components</li></ul>

<p>Whale Riders has solid gameplay and fantastic art, but the above mentioned games contain all of that <em>plus more</em>. They stand out in at least one major way, while Whale Riders struggles to differentiate itself. Whether its a novel component, fresh concept, killer production, convenient feature, or something else entirely, the more hooks a project has, the stronger its campaign will be.</p>

<p>Jamey Stegmaier <strong><a href="https://stonemaiergames.com/kickstarter-lesson-209-the-hook/">understands the importance of a hook</a></strong>. If you are wanting to pitch a game design to his company, the hook is a must. This philosophy has helped Stonemaier games to become the <strong><a href="https://stonemaiergames.com/2019-behind-the-scenes-stakeholder-report-for-stonemaier-games/">indie publisher juggernaut</a></strong> that it is today.</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"><p>Just to be clear, I’m not just saying that I want our games to have an&nbsp;<em>interesting&nbsp;</em>theme or a&nbsp;<em>unique&nbsp;</em>mechanism. Being interesting and unique are interesting qualities, but they’re different than the hook. The key to a great hook is that it&nbsp;<strong>grabs your attention</strong>. It stands out in a crowd.</p><cite>Jamey Stegmaier</cite></blockquote>

<p>Kickstarter projects have used many effective tools to earn pledges from myself and many others. These tools include:</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>Get straight to the point with your campaign video and page. <em>Why should I be excited about your project becoming a reality? </em>(Wavelength)</li><li>Low-risk rewards and strong design credibility makes the pledge button easier to click (Button Shy&#8217;s wallet games).</li><li>Quality and consistency earns attention and loyalty (Dice Throne).</li><li>Alluring presentations and illuminating playthroughs are critical to influencing hesitant backers (Sleeping Gods, Calico).</li><li>High standards and hot streaks are the fastest route to super fans (GPS, Sequoia, Mountain Goats, Oath).</li><li>Meaningful upgrades and add-ons are the best shovels for digging deeper into my wallet (Railroad Ink Challenge).</li><li>Reliable brands and try-before-you-buy is a great way to earn unsolicited volunteers and proactive supporters (Bristol 1350).</li><li>Listening and responding to backers will gain the trust of current and prospective supporters (Kemet: Blood and Sand).</li><li>A solid game will be successful (Whale Riders), but a solid game with a hook will flourish.</li></ol>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Party Game Spectrum</h2>

<p>On a spectrum of all the party games I have ever played, Wavelength firmly plants itself at the top.</p>

<p>Wavelength is a game that minimizes the exceptions to its party-style fun and maximizes the engagement of its players. I can think of very few types of group gatherings where Wavelength wouldn’t be a great fit. Furthermore, every single person in our play groups have been fully invested and having a great time, despite our individual differences.</p>

<p>The designers knew exactly what kind of experience they wanted to provide when they crafted Wavelength. They wanted a game where both teams had compelling incentives to be thinking and engaged throughout. They wanted a production where the highs and lows of each round were built upon a supplemental foundation of solid components. Most of all, they wanted to capture the fun of a great social party game and build a framework of mechanisms that could consistently provide that experience from turn to turn and round to round.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="600" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic5055178.png" alt="" class="wp-image-245" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic5055178.png 900w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic5055178-600x400.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic5055178-300x200.png 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic5055178-768x512.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption>What clue would you give for this one?  I think I would have said &#8220;rocks&#8221; or &#8220;drinking fountain water&#8221; </figcaption></figure>

<p>Wavelength is no one-trick pony, unlike so many of the generic party games on the market. It is no flash in the pan that only occasionally provides what party gamers are looking for. It is the REAL DEAL.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Contender Among Legends</h2>

<p>Where Just One provides for clever moments at the cost of minimal social engagement, and Codenames’ genuine fun lives or dies upon the comparable capabilities of its competing clue givers, and Monikers heavily relies upon the breadth and depth of its players’ knowledge while pushing them potentially too far outside of their comfort zone, and Decrypto’s vast brilliance can strain under its AP inducing pressure and player-count-limiting secrecy&#8230; Wavelength somehow sidesteps all these drawbacks with grace and ease.</p>

<p>Wavelength manages to level the playing field AND stretch its potential far beyond the number of cards in its box. It accomplishes this with its random and continuous spectrum that demands pinpoint creativity while providing infinite possibility in each clue given by the Psychic of the round. The odds of a single player ending up with the same target location along the same spectrum card leading them to blurt out the exact same clue as before is practically zero. While I sometimes find myself in a game of Codenames or Codenames Pictures lamely relying on recycled clues to carry me through to the finish line of victory, I can’t see myself possibly being able to fall into the same rut with Wavelength. And that difference excites me.</p>

<p>The opposing team of each round is not a mere group of spectators, either. As Wavelength is wisely a fast “one more time” kind of game where the victors are crowned at 10 points, every point is critical; and the single point up for grabs during the opposing team’s turn is of utmost importance. Like any good discussion or debate, Wavelength is a form of meta-communication where the spotlight team discusses their insights and commits to an opinion; then, after listening to and absorbing the proposed logic, the opposing team briefly reviews the key points—adding insights of their own—and designates their own official opinion on the matter.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="423" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/pic5140757.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-926" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/pic5140757.jpg 900w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/pic5140757-600x282.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/pic5140757-300x141.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/pic5140757-768x361.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption>The game comes with &#8220;advanced&#8221; cards for those looking for a meatier challenge</figcaption></figure>

<p>And this is where the real meat of the game is found&#8230; in the juicy discussion. Each participant finds themself exploring topics and ideas in new and exciting ways. Friends and teammates develop and discover opinions in search competitive consensus. The topics of discussion are tantalizingly limitless&#8230; Just how durable is a 4-year-old on a spectrum of fragile to durable? Just how sexy is that local church pastor? How wet is Tres Leches compared to completely wet and completely dry? How dangerous is a chef’s job? How hipster is a beanie? These discussions were captivating, tense, hilarious, and memorable. And they all segwayed perfectly in the second act of the game: the grand reveal.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Thoughtful Production</h2>

<p>Wavelength’s gorgeous production proves how essential game components can be. Where Just One’s fun dry erase colors perfectly complement it’s functional boards, Wavelength’s entire box is a thing of beauty. Wavelength requires no table, no surface, no extra fluff. One of its most underrated strengths might just be how physically simple and contained the entire game is; it is a self-contained box of limitless fun that gets passed around from one player to the next. The star feature is, of course, the spinning wheel target with its grandiose sliding screen and pinpoint dial. Few things in all of gaming feel more satisfying than flipping this screen wide open with a quick click-slide-thud to elicit genuine reactions from your entire group.</p>

<p>I can only knock the game in two minor ways, and both pertain to the production: 1. The device doesn’t lock into the box when stood up, allowing for frequent dislodging when players are too slow to budge the screen open. 2. The text on the spectrum cards is very small, being near impossible to read from across anything larger than a table. Fortunately, some instructional practice and verbal clarification can easily remedy each problem, respectively.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Final Verdict</h2>

<p>I honestly can’t think of a party game better than this one. It has all the ingredients of a fantastic experience for 6+ players, where it can soar upon the winds of discussion between team members, yet it’s still an entertaining experience with 2+ players, where a quieter game of cooperative or competitive introspection can abide.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="416" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/pic5140756.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-927" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/pic5140756.jpg 900w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/pic5140756-600x277.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/pic5140756-300x139.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/pic5140756-768x355.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption>The wheel of fun</figcaption></figure>

<p>For my house, Wavelength beats out other party classics including our very favorites (Decrypto, Codenames, Deception: Murder in Hong Kong, etc.) because of its consistent and simple one-two punch of memorable discussions and climactic reveals. From me, it earns a perfect 10/10, a score which I have never given a party game as I have never come to love one quite like this. Maybe 10 or 50 or 100 plays from now I’ll feel differently about it, but it’s genuinely hard to imagine myself enjoying it any less thanks to its excitingly endless possibilities.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Untitled_Artwork-6-1024x1024.png" alt="" class="wp-image-763" width="385" height="385" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Untitled_Artwork-6-1024x1024.png 1024w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Untitled_Artwork-6-300x300.png 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Untitled_Artwork-6-100x100.png 100w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Untitled_Artwork-6-600x600.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Untitled_Artwork-6-150x150.png 150w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Untitled_Artwork-6-768x768.png 768w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Untitled_Artwork-6.png 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px" /><figcaption>Two Thumbs up for Wavelength!</figcaption></figure></div>

<p><em>New to the world of board games? Turns out there are more games than Risk, Monopoly, and Uno. Like&#8230;a lot more games! I had NO idea just how many games are out there&#8230;and it is overwhelming. So, what are the best board games for beginners? Let&#8217;s talk about that.</em></p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<p>New to the hobby of board games? Welcome! A seasoned vet looking for ways to get your friends and family into the hobby? You&#8217;re in the right place. </p>

<p>The worst thing you could do is introduce your friends/family to the wrong game, making them erroneously decide that board games aren&#8217;t for them. So what makes a good board game for beginners?</p>

<p>It needs to be fun!</p>

<p>Obvious right?!?! But seriously, what ingredients are guaranteed to provide an experience that will make the players hungry for more? The best board games for beginners need:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Accessibility &#8211; short, easy to learn rules. No one entering the world of games wants to sit through 20 minutes of instructions before actually starting a game.</li><li> <a href="https://bitewinggames.com/tabletop-tastes-4-crunchy-meaningful-decisions/">Meaningful Decisions</a> &#8211; how fun is it to have the person next to you tell you the best thing to do every turn of a game? I&#8217;ll answer for you &#8211; not fun at all! A game should allow players to make decisions on their own, where there isn&#8217;t necessarily a right or best choice.</li><li>Memorable Moments &#8211; this can come from those decisions we just mentioned. Or they can come from unique mechanics of the game or intriguing player interaction. </li></ul>

<p>Enough theoretical chit chat &#8211; lets get to the list!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">10 Best Board Games for Beginners</h2>

<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>Ticket to Ride &#8211; Forge a path across the country by collecting colorful train cards.</li><li>Azul &#8211; The tiles are beautiful, the decisions are interesting, this is a surefire hit.</li><li>Kingdomino &#8211; Lay domino-type tiles in a grid, striving to earn more points than your competitors.</li><li>Splendor &#8211; Collect and spend beautiful gem tokens to buy victory points and attract nobles.</li><li>Carcassonne &#8211; Connect square tiles to grow and build a kingdom &#8211; careful or others may sneak in and share or steal those points.</li><li>Catan &#8211; Roll the dice to earn resources to grow your settlements. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. Ticket to Ride</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/TTR-5-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-984" width="381" height="381" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/TTR-5-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/TTR-5-300x300.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/TTR-5-100x100.jpg 100w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/TTR-5-600x600.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/TTR-5-150x150.jpg 150w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/TTR-5-768x768.jpg 768w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/TTR-5-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/TTR-5.jpg 1800w" sizes="(max-width: 381px) 100vw, 381px" /><figcaption>The beautiful cards of Ticket To Ride</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>In an online poll, this game is by far the highest rated &#8220;gateway game&#8221; to get people into the hobby.</p>

<p>Ticket to Ride has you collecting train cards to forge a path across the country completing objectives. But each path can only be taken by one player &#8211; who will get it first?</p>

<p><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamedesigner/9/alan-r-moon">Alan R. Moon</a>, the board game creater himself said &#8220;The tension comes from being forced to balance greed – adding more cards to your hand, and fear – losing a critical route to a competitor.&#8221;</p>

<p>Lay your cards too early and give away exactly where you are going. Hold onto the cards for too long, and discover another player has stolen your path. Ticket to Ride stands out as a best board game for beginners for a reason! While it is easy to learn and play, it still heavily features meaningful decisions &#8211; where there isn&#8217;t one right way to do things.</p>

<p>Ticket to Ride America is the classic, the Vanilla. Feeling a little more adventurous? Check out one of the other versions &#8211; Europe and Africa are my 2 favorites.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. Azul</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Azul-16-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-893" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Azul-16-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Azul-16-600x400.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Azul-16-300x200.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Azul-16-768x512.jpg 768w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Azul-16-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Azul-16.jpg 1800w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Player board at the end of a game of Azul</figcaption></figure>

<p>This game checks off all 3 of my boxes for best board game for beginners.</p>

<p>Accesibility &#8211; Short rule book. Quick to teach and learn. Anyone can pick up the rules lickity-split.</p>

<p>Meaningful Decisions &#8211; You are collecting tiles from center draw piles. But each time you take tiles you are also making other tiles more availble for other players. Simple actions, with meaningful decisions attached.</p>

<p>Memorable Moments &#8211; Choose carefully which of the 5 rows of your player board you will lay these tiles on. The order and timing of where you lay the tiles is the crux of this game.</p>

<p>A perfect game for the newbie and the old-timer alike. More detail on Azul <a href="https://bitewinggames.com/is-azul-fun/">here</a>. There are two additional versions of Azul beyond the original&#8230;so once you&#8217;ve gotten into one, you have <a href="https://bitewinggames.com/which-azul-is-best/">more options to choose between</a> down the road.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3. Kingdomino</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/kingdomino.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-985" width="408" height="306" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/kingdomino.jpg 800w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/kingdomino-600x450.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/kingdomino-300x225.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/kingdomino-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px" /><figcaption>A finished kingdom in Kingdomino</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>This game uses tiles with two sections, similar to Dominoes. Each turn, each player will select a new domino to connect to their existing kingdom, making sure at least one of its sides connects to a matching terrain type already in play.</p>

<p>Select the cream of the crop tile now, and get stuck being the last one to choose your tile the next round. Talk about meaningful decisions each round! </p>

<p>Each game will provide unique objectives &#8211; ways to earn more points based off of which tiles you lay where. Kingdomino is easy to learn and fun to play. And it literally will play in 15 minutes. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4. Splendor</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Splendor-3-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-979" width="427" height="427" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Splendor-3-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Splendor-3-300x300.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Splendor-3-100x100.jpg 100w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Splendor-3-600x600.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Splendor-3-150x150.jpg 150w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Splendor-3-768x768.jpg 768w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Splendor-3-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Splendor-3.jpg 1800w" sizes="(max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px" /><figcaption>Stunning tokens in Splendor</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>When it comes to the best board games for beginners, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXN2nqaMupU&amp;frags=pl%2Cwn">Splendor tops my list</a>. While it may not top my list of all time favorite games, I have yet to teach it to someone who doesn&#8217;t instantly love it. </p>

<p>Splendor has amazing little poker chip style tokens; gem tokens. You will use your turns to collect these tokens. Upon growing your collection, you can now spend them to buy development cards &#8211; which give you points and also award you a bonus gem &#8211; a permanent discount on any future purchases.</p>

<p>Maybe there is one card out there that is really calling your name, but your neighbor almost has all the gems needed to buy it before you&#8230; No problem! You can reserve the card so no one else can take it.</p>

<p>Splendor is one of the easiest games to learn, and offers fun decision making. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">5. Carcassonne</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/carcassonne.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-986" width="457" height="343" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/carcassonne.jpg 800w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/carcassonne-600x450.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/carcassonne-300x225.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/carcassonne-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 457px) 100vw, 457px" /><figcaption>2 player game of Carcassonne</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>This game has a few unique concepts for the beginner to wrap their minds around, but that doesn&#8217;t mean it is difficult to learn. </p>

<p>Players will take turns placing tiles in the center of the table. Unlike most games where you play pieces on a board, you are actually creating the game board as you go, laying more and more tiles to create a French landscape.</p>

<p>Connecting roads to roads, cities to cities, players will grow and shape this central &#8220;playing board,&#8221; earning points along the way. </p>

<p>Not only will you lay tiles, but you will also play little wooden people (meeple) on the board, claiming stake of that road or that city. And here is where it gets really interesting &#8211; you can join or close off cities depending on if you play your tiles right &#8211; getting more points for you, or stopping another player from completing a city and earning any points at all.</p>

<p>Full of great decisions and introducing unique mechanics, Carcossonne is one of the best board games for beginners!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">6. Catan</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/catan.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-987" width="421" height="316" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/catan.jpg 550w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/catan-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 421px) 100vw, 421px" /><figcaption>Building on the island of Catan</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>At what point does a game hit the status of &#8220;a classic,&#8221; cause Catan may be there. Catan, previously known as Settlers of Catan, gives players the opportunity to build settlements around hexagagonal tiles. New settlements and roads don&#8217;t appear out of thin air, they require lumber, ore, brick. Players will gain resources if they have a settlement built around a tile that has its number rolled.</p>

<p>This is a great board game for beginners because there is such a fun sense of growth as the game progresses. While there are decisions, they are not overwhelming so it is easy for the new player to catch on quickly.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">7. Wavelength</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Wavelength-9-2-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-991" width="538" height="358" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Wavelength-9-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Wavelength-9-2-600x400.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Wavelength-9-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Wavelength-9-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Wavelength-9-2.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 538px) 100vw, 538px" /><figcaption>Hard not to laugh during a game of Wavelength</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>I was torn putting a party-style game on a list of games for beginners&#8230;<em>isn&#8217;t that like one step back?</em> I wondered. But hear me out. You&#8217;ll split into 2 teams, one person will give a clue based off of a card, and the team will twist a dial to make their guess. While it is basically your classic 2 team party game, Wavelength stands out in its freshness. There isn&#8217;t quite as much riding on the cluegiver &#8211; making players less prone to dread the idea of being the cluegiver. </p>

<p>Wavelength also has a nice spinner and markers to keep score, not totally unlike other party games, but I think these things really get non-gamers more comfortable with tallying score and having more on the table than just a deck of playing cards or clue cards.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">8. Bohnanza</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Bohnanza-5-1-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-989" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Bohnanza-5-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Bohnanza-5-1-scaled-600x400.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Bohnanza-5-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Bohnanza-5-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Bohnanza-5-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Bohnanza-5-1-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Green Bean chilling by my bug-eaten green bean plants</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>If you ask me what strategy game the whole family can play &#8211; I&#8217;ll point you to Bohnanza. This easily makes it on my list of best board games for beginners. As a bean farmer you are trying to collect beans &#8211; the more of a type you collect the more they are worth.</p>

<p>The catch, you can&#8217;t reorder the cards in your hand&#8230;and you can only have 2 types of beans at a time that you&#8217;re collecting. So how do you get cards that you want? Negotiation! And that is where this game shines. Some games are played on the table &#8211; Splendor for example. I feel like there isn&#8217;t much chit chat going on in Splendor, just a bunch of people staring at the pieces of the board game. Bohnanza is the opposite &#8211; you will spend more time looking at and talking to players than you will looking at the cards on the table.</p>

<p>And Bohnanza plays up to 7 players, so for a bigger family or larger group of friends &#8211; Bohnanza is my game of choice!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">9. Pandemic</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="219" height="300" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Pandemic.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-219"/></figure></div>

<p>Like Catan, Pandemic at this point is a Classic! Pandemic is a cooperative game &#8211; that means you are playing as a team trying to beat the game. The deck of cards and the clock are working against you as your team tries to cure a deadly disease that is threatening all of mankind&#8230;and womankind. Humankind?!?</p>

<p>Each player has a special ability, and if you can work together effectively you will be able to eradicate the disease by moving your characters around the board sharing information and curing disease outbreaks. This game works wonderfully with new players, because if they are confused they have no information to hide &#8211; you&#8217;re on a team, they can ask any question they like. </p>

<p>Just beware of the alpha-gamer. You know the kind, that one guy who knows what is best for everyone and isn&#8217;t afraid to tell you exactly what to do. Pandemic is a great board game for beginners!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">10. Majesty: For the Realm</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Majesty.png" alt="" class="wp-image-990" width="434" height="302" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Majesty.png 845w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Majesty-600x418.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Majesty-300x209.png 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Majesty-768x535.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 434px) 100vw, 434px" /><figcaption>Characters of Majesty</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>One of the most underrated games I have ever played. I said you don&#8217;t want to take 20 minutes to teach a game to a new player. In Majesty you can explain AND play this game in 20-30 minutes. </p>

<p>Each turn is as simple as <em>take an available card</em>. That is it! Each card you take will award you points for the character card you take, along with the combination of other cards you have already acquired. The points earned are straight forward and easy to tally &#8211; no degree in accounting needed. And don&#8217;t be decieved. Just because your only option is to take a card doesn&#8217;t mean that the game is simple or boring &#8211; plenty of meaningful decisions here!</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<p>Like I said, Risk, Monopoly, Uno&#8230;that&#8217;s just the tip of the iceburg. These 10 games are surefire hits for you as a new gamer, or your friends who aren&#8217;t (yet) into the world of board games. Now, stop reading and start playing!</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="alignleft is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Kyle-and-Amanda-18-683x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-54" width="72" height="108" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Kyle-and-Amanda-18-683x1024.jpg 683w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Kyle-and-Amanda-18-scaled-600x900.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Kyle-and-Amanda-18-200x300.jpg 200w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Kyle-and-Amanda-18-768x1152.jpg 768w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Kyle-and-Amanda-18-scaled.jpg 1707w" sizes="(max-width: 72px) 100vw, 72px" /></figure></div>

<p>While they didn&#8217;t quite make the top 10, these games were still winners in our book&#8230;</p>

<h3 class="has-text-align-left wp-block-heading">Horrified</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="420" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pic5140556.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-776" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pic5140556.jpg 900w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pic5140556-600x280.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pic5140556-300x140.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pic5140556-768x358.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption>Watch out for that Creature!</figcaption></figure>

<p><strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/282524/horrified">Horrified</a></strong> puts a nice monster-movie spin on the cooperative system made popular by Pandemic. Players team up to save the town from multiple monsters including Dracula, The Invisible Man, The Mummy, and more! This one is great for casual fun with families and friends! But make no mistake, it&#8217;s no pushover.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator is-style-dots"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">On Tour</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4128375.png" alt="" class="wp-image-532" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4128375.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4128375-300x300.png 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4128375-100x100.png 100w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4128375-150x150.png 150w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /><figcaption>Plan a tour for your band through the USA!</figcaption></figure>

<p>I first played On Tour at Origins 2019 at a fancy Craps-like table with a large group of strangers. It was highly satisfying to take a turn rolling the two beefy dice by chucking them across the table against its padded walls. While I wasn&#8217;t able to bring the table home, On Tour has earned a spot on my shelf as a simple and satisfying roll &amp; write. On Tour&#8217;s tightness proves that <strong><a href="https://bitewinggames.com/tabletop-tastes-1-spicy-tension-of-objectives/">even a game without player interaction can have plenty of tension.</a></strong></p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator is-style-dots"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Unmatched</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="403" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pic5140619.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-777" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pic5140619.jpg 900w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pic5140619-600x269.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pic5140619-300x134.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pic5140619-768x344.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption>Image provided by Dan Thurot, check out his <a href="https://spacebiff.com/2019/10/10/unmatched/">Space Biff review of Unmatched</a></figcaption></figure>

<p>While the gameplay in <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/274637/unmatched-battle-legends-volume-one">Unmatched</a></strong> doesn&#8217;t necessarily <em>wow</em> me, the presentation does! <a href="https://www.shutupandsitdown.com/videos/review-unmatched/">Quinns from Shut Up &amp; Sit Down describes it best</a> by calling it &#8220;popcorn fun.&#8221; The ever increasing variety of heroes and packages are somehow always enticing me to dive in for more light, combative amusement.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator is-style-dots"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Irish Gauge</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="857" height="600" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pic4659153.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-780" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pic4659153.jpg 857w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pic4659153-600x420.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pic4659153-300x210.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pic4659153-768x538.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 857px) 100vw, 857px" /><figcaption>Irish Gauge is a juicy game in a crisp package</figcaption></figure>

<p>Admittedly, <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/161882/irish-gauge">Irish Gauge</a></strong> probably deserves a spot in my top 10 games of 2019, and perhaps even <strong><a href="https://bitewinggames.com/nicks-current-top-50-games/">my top 50 games of all time</a></strong>. It&#8217;ll have to stay in the honorable mentions for now because I&#8217;ve only played it once and it technically released before 2019. But Capstone games decided to bring it to mass market last year, and they did a knock-out job with with production. I&#8217;m hungry to dive back into this elegant railroad game with a 1-sheet rulebook and a world of Irish possibilities. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">PARKS</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="600" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4978780.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-539" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4978780.jpg 800w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4978780-600x450.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4978780-300x225.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4978780-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption>Take a stroll through a park.</figcaption></figure>

<p><strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/266524/parks">PARKS</a></strong> is a feast for the eyes and some warmth for the soul. This game is the perfect case study for <strong><a href="https://bitewinggames.com/tabletop-tastes-3-savory-thoughtful-production/">how to do a thoughtful production.</a></strong> The serviceable gameplay is propelled by its presentation into an absolute pleasure of an experience. After an hour of light fun, you will come away with a hunger to visit a National Park.</p>

<p><em>Welcome back to Tabletop Tastes: My Favorite Flavors in Board Games!</em> <em>Missed the last episode? Head over and check out <a href="http://bitewinggames.com/tabletop-tastes-2-salty-player-interaction">Tabletop Taste #2: Salty Player Interaction.</a></em></p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<p>I really appreciate when companies give a lot of love to even the little things in their product or service.&nbsp; These touches can be as subtle as the crisp packaging of an Apple product, the non-messy cap on a Tide detergent container, and the dippable ketchup packets at Chick-fil-a.</p>

<p>I am likewise impressed when a publisher goes the extra mile to make their game look and feel good.&nbsp; Perhaps no publisher out there understands this concept better than <a href="https://stonemaiergames.com"><strong>Stonemaier Games</strong></a>. When I first saw pictures of the 2019 darling, <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/266192/wingspan"><strong>Wingspan</strong></a>, I said “Wow.”&nbsp; But when I first opened and unboxed Wingspan, I said “WOW!”</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="600" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4658254.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-538" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4658254.jpg 800w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4658254-600x450.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4658254-300x225.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4658254-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption>Wingspan</figcaption></figure>

<p>The art is top tier, the box feels great, the containers are perfect, the eggs are slick, the cards are gorgeous, the game has a freaking bird feeder, the <em>rulebook</em> even feels good.&nbsp; Say what you will about Stonemaier Games’ philosophy, but they know how to produce a game and it <em>works</em>.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/266524/parks">PARKS</a></strong> is another game with a thoughtful production that rises to the caliber of its stunning art with inserts and tokens and bits that round out a deliciously beautiful package.&nbsp; The gameplay doesn’t revolutionize the industry, yet it doesn’t need to when it deftly assaults nearly all of your senses with everything else.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="600" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4978780.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-539" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4978780.jpg 800w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4978780-600x450.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4978780-300x225.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4978780-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption>PARKS</figcaption></figure>

<p><strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/237182/root">Root</a></strong> makes a knockout first impression with its whimsical artwork, screen printed meeples, chunky battle dice, and painstakingly arranged player aids.&nbsp; It’s brilliant production lures you in like a tasty appetizer, and before you know it you are waist deep in a much more meaty and nasty game than you could ever have predicted.&nbsp; Even as the group gangs up on your beautiful birds and throws your Eyrie Dynasty into dreaded turmoil, there is no denying how pleasing the game looks to the eye and feels to the fingers.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="469" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4282156.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-540" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4282156.jpg 900w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4282156-600x313.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4282156-300x156.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4282156-768x400.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption>Root</figcaption></figure>

<p><strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/261114/men-work">Men At Work</a></strong> likewise tosses its hard hat into the ring of premium with colorful components that have the perfect size, weight, and feel to match its laser-focused dexterity gameplay… and nothing beats that feeling when you first open the game and get to press the snug plastic hard hats onto each of the wooden construction meeples.&nbsp; Are these perfectly crafted hard hats essential to the gameplay? No. But are these perfectly crafted hard hats essential to the experience? YES.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="569" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4318461.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-541" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4318461.jpg 900w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4318461-600x379.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4318461-300x190.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4318461-768x486.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption>Men At Work</figcaption></figure>

<p>I can think of no production more clever, more praiseworthy, or more essential than that of <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/262543/wavelength"><strong>Wavelength</strong></a>. This is the kind of production that the designers crafted with the end in mind. They knew that in order to get the most of out of the concept, they needed a device that allows approximative gut-feeling guesses for teammates and dramatically climactic reveals from the psychic. The spinning target wheel, the clicky red dial, and the snappy blue screen are a thing of beauty. This device is a genius component worthy of Wolfgang Warsch’s brilliance. The game is even self-contained and almost instantly ready-to-rumble thanks to a carefully crafted box insert that eliminates the need for a table.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="600" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic5055178.png" alt="" class="wp-image-245" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic5055178.png 900w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic5055178-600x400.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic5055178-300x200.png 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic5055178-768x512.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption>Wavelength</figcaption></figure>

<p>These games are so satisfying to setup and tear down, to touch and manipulate, to play and replay because the publishers were willing to invest in a thoughtful production.&nbsp; Compare these games to other legendary titles like <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/167791/terraforming-mars">Terraforming Mars</a></strong>, <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/84876/castles-burgundy">Castles of Burgundy</a></strong>, and <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/206718/ethnos">Ethnos</a></strong>, and you may notice a subconscious reluctance to play the underproduced games over the premium feeling ones.&nbsp; No game <em>needs</em> a thoughtful production to be great, no game <em>needs</em> to be deluxified to be playable, but why not opt for something that looks good and feels good whenever possible?&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="603" height="453" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic919792.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-542" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic919792.jpg 603w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic919792-600x451.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic919792-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 603px) 100vw, 603px" /><figcaption>The Castles of Burgundy</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Wingspan, PARKS, Root, Men At Work, and Wavelength are gorgeously thoughtful productions that <a href="http://boardgameprices.com"><strong>can all be bought at a perfectly reasonable price</strong></a> (when in stock, of course); these games raise the bar for not only their slightly higher cost-to-manufacture components but also the perceptible love, care, and ingenuity that went into their presentation.</p>

<p>Fortunately, even when a presentation is a bit of a train wreck, like the above mentioned Castles of Burgundy and Ethnos, these games are certainly salvaged by the crunchy meaningful decisions they provide.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="682" height="600" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4305733.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-534" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4305733.jpg 682w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4305733-600x528.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic4305733-300x264.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px" /><figcaption>Camel Up (Second Edition)</figcaption></figure>

<p>There is something so satisfying about finding the chinks in an opponent’s armor and crafting a master plan around this vulnerability&#8230;&nbsp; Like when your friends go all in on the leading blue camel of <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/260605/camel-second-edition"><strong>Camel Up</strong></a>, so you do everything in your power to slow down the blue camel and speed up the underdog red camel.&nbsp; Or when you observe that your spouse will spare no expense at winning a certain category in an auction game like <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/266830/qe"><strong>QE</strong></a> or <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/118/modern-art"><strong>Modern Art</strong></a>, so you gleefully jack up the bid knowing you have no intention of purchasing the item.&nbsp; Or when your buddy starts throwing down oak trees in a game of <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/140934/arboretum"><strong>Arboretum</strong></a> just as you acquire a high value oak into your hand, so you quietly keep it tucked away among your cards like a dagger waiting to be plunged.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-36.png" alt="" class="wp-image-434" width="281" height="391" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-36.png 646w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-36-600x836.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-36-215x300.png 215w" sizes="(max-width: 281px) 100vw, 281px" /></figure></div>

<p>Things get even more interesting when the actions of those around the table force you to adapt your strategy and pivot your plans.&nbsp; When the opposing team in <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/225694/decrypto"><strong>Decrypto</strong></a> starts to catch on to your clues, forcing your team out of their comfort zone and onto thin ice with increasingly precarious clues.&nbsp; Or when your rival applies the military pressure in <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/173346/7-wonders-duel">7 Wonders Duel</a></strong> as they draft more cards to march the red token down the track toward your demise. Or when you are playing <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/244992/mind">The Mind</a></strong> and your gut tells you it’s time to play that 62 in your hand, but as you slowly reach for it you feel your blood pressure rise as you notice that a teammate is thinking the exact same thing about the card in their hand.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/5425016923818_p2_v4_s550x406.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-535" width="359" height="296" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/5425016923818_p2_v4_s550x406.jpg 493w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/5425016923818_p2_v4_s550x406-300x247.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px" /><figcaption>7 Wonder Duel</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>I don’t believe that a game that lacks player interaction is a poor design, but I can’t ignore my preference toward games with player interaction.&nbsp; I like the puzzly challenge that a good tabletop game provides, but I <em>love</em> when that challenge morphs, evolves, and transforms according to the personalities and brains of my opponents and/or teammates at the table.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Whether it’s the hilarious discussions that <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/262543/wavelength"><strong>Wavelength </strong></a>evokes, or the shakey alliances formed within <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/256960/pax-pamir-second-edition">Pax Pamir 2e</a></strong>, or the deceptive cooperation among pirates on <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/242639/treasure-island">Treasure Island</a></strong>, or the tightly intertwined closed economy of <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/224517/brass-birmingham">Brass: Birmingham</a></strong>, I never tire of adapting to the players around me.&nbsp; A game with high player interaction is a game with high replayability and balance built right into its core system, because the game can take on an evolving meta with the same group and a transforming meta with different groups as they scramble to keep runaway leaders in check and allow underdogs to fly under the radar.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="506" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic3503662.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-536" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic3503662.jpg 900w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic3503662-600x337.jpg 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic3503662-300x169.jpg 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic3503662-768x432.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption>Terraforming Mars</figcaption></figure>

<p>This hunger for such interaction is one reason why I just couldn’t get into mega-hits like <strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/167791/terraforming-mars">Terraforming Mars</a></strong>, as each player spends most of the game focusing all their attention on their hand and player mat.&nbsp; In games like these, it can even be difficult to tell when one person’s turn has ended, as nobody has any major reason to pay attention to other players besides something like late-game public objectives. Of course, I always have room for a good multiplayer solitaire in my collection when it contains so many of my other favorite flavors like a savory thoughtful production.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><em>Wondering which games are my absolute favorite and why?</em> <em>Read on to explore my current top 50 board games!</em></h4>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-css-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Introduction</h2>

<p>I dove into the deep end of the board game community over a year ago. With helpful guides including <a href="https://www.shutupandsitdown.com/games-page/">Shut Up &amp; Sit Down&#8217;s recommended games</a>, <a href="https://www.dicetower.com/content/top-100-games-all-time">The Dice Tower&#8217;s Top 100</a>, <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/browse/boardgame?sort=rank&amp;sortdir=asc">Board Game Geek (BGG) rankings</a>, <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/GeekBuddy&amp;redirectedfrom=GeekBuddies#">Geekbuddy</a> comments, and more, my hunt has led me through the “Cult of the New”, Cult of the Classic, and many games in between. </p>

<p>I&#8217;ve played and purchased more board games in the past year than I have in my entire life, and it has been a blast! The true catalyst that launched me into the hobby was when I discovered a passion for designing board games during the summer of 2018. My experience learning and playing new-to-me tabletop games has been one of both research and adventure, discovery and inspiration. As I&#8217;ve sought to feed my creative drive, I&#8217;ve also uncovered an explorative hunger and <a href="https://bitewinggames.com/tabletop-tastes-1-spicy-tension-of-objectives/"><strong>developed a personal palate.</strong></a> Playing board games and creating board games are cyclical interests for me that have consumed much of my free time since they began.</p>

<p>So while I feel my understanding of the board game industry is well researched and experienced on one hand, I realize my complete amateur status on the other. Perhaps my perspective will offer you something new to consider, and I certainly hope you won&#8217;t hesitate to offer me suggestions as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>If you feel we may have similar tastes, and you have a BGG account, please feel free to <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/user/Murraculous"><strong>add me as a Geekbuddy</strong></a>! I&#8217;m always eager to hear what you fine folks think of any games I am curious about, and I&#8217;ve found the Geekbuddy tool to be invaluable in narrowing down my wishlist. It’s also possible that your suggestion for me is already on my wishlist, so check out my <a href="https://bitewinggames.com/most-anticipated-board-games-of-2020/"><strong>most anticipated new-to-me games list!</strong></a></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">So without further adO, I present to you my current Top 50 Games!</h2>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-wide"/>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">#50 <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/132531/roll-galaxy">Roll for the Galaxy</a></p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="900" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-1.png" alt="" class="wp-image-398" style="width:304px;height:304px" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-1.png 900w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-1-300x300.png 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-1-100x100.png 100w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-1-600x600.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-1-150x150.png 150w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-1-768x768.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></figure></div>

<p><em>Recommended for: Gamers</em></p>

<p>I seem to like this game more every time I play it. Always engaging and interesting with loads of variety. The rules and symbols can seem intimidating at first, but the player shields contain basically all the information you need to play the game (and remember the rules). Very well done production.</p>

<p>I realize how popular Terraforming Mars is, but Roll for the Galaxy is my preferred space engine builder thanks to its zippy play time, better production, and higher fun factor.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-css-opacity"/>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">#49 <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/92415/skull">Skull</a></p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="391" height="403" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic1779342.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-448" style="width:347px;height:358px" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic1779342.jpg 391w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pic1779342-291x300.jpg 291w" sizes="(max-width: 391px) 100vw, 391px" /></figure></div>

<p><em>Recommended for: Everyone</em></p>

<p>Skull is a game of bluffing filtered down into its purest form. I love those moments when I can get on a roll and make my opponents feel like I am reading them like a book.</p>

<p>If you enjoy bluffing games like Poker, but you want a game that throws out everything but the good old bluffing, then Skull is for you!</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-css-opacity"/>

<p class="has-text-align-left has-medium-font-size">#48 <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/70919/takenoko">Takenoko</a></p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="917" height="900" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-2.png" alt="" class="wp-image-400" style="width:337px;height:331px" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-2.png 917w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-2-600x589.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-2-300x294.png 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-2-768x754.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 917px) 100vw, 917px" /></figure></div>

<p><em>Recommended for: Everyone</em></p>

<p>Fantastic family game. We absolutely love the theme and components; the presentation is a home-run. The feeling of watering bamboo tiles to build bamboo towers and moving the Panda to eat bamboo comes together so nicely.</p>

<p>The event die is interesting in how it encourages players to adapt their strategy on each turn.</p>

<p>There is definitely a significant amount of luck involved in drawing the right or wrong objective cards (especially late in the game). This can make some plays quite frustrating for competitive players.</p>

<p>The Takenoko: Chibis expansion helps with mitigating some bad luck and adds some really interesting mechanics to the game, so I would suggest getting the expansion if you enjoy the base game.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-css-opacity"/>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">#47 <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/217372/quest-el-dorado">The Quest for El Dorado</a></p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="802" height="800" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-3.png" alt="" class="wp-image-401" style="width:391px;height:389px" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-3.png 802w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-3-300x300.png 300w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-3-100x100.png 100w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-3-600x599.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-3-150x150.png 150w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-3-768x766.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 802px) 100vw, 802px" /></figure></div>

<p><em>Recommended for: Everyone</em></p>

<p>There&#8217;s something about this game that is so slick, streamlined, and satisfying. Perhaps the obvious answer is: Reiner Knizia. I love how this deck-builder makes you plan ahead and consider the long-term consequences of buying all those machete cards when a dense area of water and villages lie ahead in the distance.</p>

<p>There&#8217;s also something to be said of a game that contains all the essential rules on the thin rectangular player boards, making for an easy-breezy teach leading to an epic, tense race.</p>

<p>The Quest for El Dorado has served as a major case-study and inspiration for the snowboarding deck-builder that I’ve been designing myself.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-css-opacity"/>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">#46 <strong>&nbsp;</strong><a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/221965/fox-forest">The Fox in the Forest</a></p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="630" height="900" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-4.png" alt="" class="wp-image-402" style="width:306px;height:437px" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-4.png 630w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-4-600x857.png 600w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-4-210x300.png 210w" sizes="(max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px" /></figure></div>

<p><em>Recommended for: Everyone</em></p>

<p>I grew up playing <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/1260/rook">Rook</a> from time to time with relatives. Having an auction based on your hand of cards always felt like such a clever way to mitigate luck in a trick-taking game. It never occurred to me that losing a trick could be just as much fun as winning a trick.</p>

<p>Enter The Fox in the Forest. I love how players can spend early tricks baiting their opponent, testing the waters, while late tricks find them desperately struggling to balance their wins and losses. Man, I need to play this again.</p>

<p>As I’ve been designing a trick-taking game inspired by hot air balloon competitions, The Fox in the Forest has been instrumental in helping me refine the mechanisms of my design.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-css-opacity"/>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">#45 <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/223770/startups">Startups</a></p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="511" height="900" src="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-5.png" alt="" class="wp-image-403" style="width:237px;height:418px" srcset="https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-5.png 511w, https://bitewinggames.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/image-5-170x300.png 170w" sizes="(max-width: 511px) 100vw, 511px" /></figure></div>

<p><em>Recommended for: Everyone</em></p>

<p>I picked up Startups very recently (<a href="https://www.shutupandsitdown.com/videos/10-oink-games-reviewed-in-10-minutes/">thanks to the fine folks at SU&amp;SD</a>), and found it to be delightfully similar to <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/140934/arboretum">Arboretum</a>. Both games reward clever hand management among calculated discards and well-timed plays. Startups is certainly the milder of the two, but still a solid card game I&#8217;m hungry to play again.</p>

<p>Startups is also my introductory game to Oink Games; their minimalist design and production is actually quite charming, in my opinion. I stumbled across Startups in a random board game store while out of town, and now <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/206051/insider">Insider</a> is next on my list to try. I’m also quite familiar with the famous <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/135779/fake-artist-goes-new-york">A Fake Artist Goes to New York</a>, although I haven’t played it, as it shares some similarities with a party game that my wife and I have in the works.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-css-opacity"/>

<p>Dominion reminds me of a good bowl of vanilla ice cream. It&#8217;s nothing flashy, but it&#8217;s a fine-tuned base of deck-building that seemingly goes well with almost anything. Sometimes it&#8217;s just nice to go back to some smooth, quick simplicity and bask in Old Faithful.</p>

<p>To me, this game has plenty of tension within the decision space of cards to purchase and cards combinations you hope to draw; but for those looking for more player interaction, it seems that the later deck-builders it inspired fill this need better. I’m particularly enamored with <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/41933/arctic-scavengers">Arctic Scavengers</a> adding in the option to save a card for combat (even as a bluff) rather than play or discard it; this particular mechanism fits perfectly into my snowboarding deck builder design of storing cards as a snowball stash.</p>

<p>Watergate captures and streamlines the element of tension that I’ve so come to love in my favorite games. This is the only game that I don’t own and haven’t played multiple times (yet), but it left a massive first impression with its novel historical theme and focused gameplay. I love that the cards have multiple uses and provide a deeper decision space beyond just deciding which card to play but how to play them.</p>

<p>Deception takes the ever popular Werewolf/Mafia style of social deduction gameplay, combines it with the basic premise of Clue, and gives it just enough mechanical framework to satisfy everyone involved. The cognitive deducers can feel clever as they narrow down the probable weapon and key evidence, and the social influencers can steer the discussion and cast suspicion.</p>

<p>Decrypto blows the ever popular <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/178900/codenames">Codenames</a> out of the water for me. I love how the clues you offer contain long-term consequences. The game forces you to think outside the box by avoiding new clues that are to closely related to old clues. One of my favorite moments is during a tie-breaker when teams must guess the exact words of their opponents.</p>

<p>If you enjoy Codenames, you have gotta try Decrypto!</p>
